Tablist Lounge

Hip hop clubs can be off putting for those who cannot count themselves among the cognoscenti. This is

because, just as you get up for a dance, the bloke behind the decks is liable to engage in a spot of turntable histrionics. Turning this problem into a plus Dema, the DJ and promoter behind Tablist Lounge, is seeking to provide a showcase for all the nimble-fingered Technics experts out there: 'We wanted a night where any DJ can get the opportunity to play out in a club, and for the people coming down it's more like visiting a gallery.’

The entertainment will not consist solely of scratch patterns, however. Each night will feature beat-juggling jams (where DJs mould their own virtual tracks by chopping up breaks and beats), battles (where two or more turntablists seek to outdo each other with technical scratch-wizardry) and showcases (where a DJ, well . . . shows off). Future plans, meanwhile. include featuring live drummers interacting with the DJ.

Residents Dema, Nice and Bunty also have a relaxed attitude to those seeking to join them behind the decks, intending as they do to operate an open-house booking policy. Established names will be booked, but not promoted, and anyone who's game can fill out a form detailing their tastes and intentions and then bring

along their 12in for the next night.

If you're a hip hop DJ, then Tablist Lounge is a godsend - nowhere else in Glasgow offers a chance to put the fruits of hours of bedroom practice before an audience. For those of us not blessed with superhuman hand/eye co-ordination and a bag full of imports, the night provides an opportunity to engage in the stunning spectacle that a good scratch-mixer can provide. (Jack Mottram) ' I Tablist Lounge is at The 73th Note on Sat 18 Sep.
