An exhibition marking the 200th anniversary of the Storming of Seringapatam by the British on 4 May I799. and the death of Tipu Sultan. ruler of the kingdom of Mysore in South India. Agnes Martin and John McLaughlin Sat l4 Aug—Sun 3| Oct. A two person show featuring the work of abstract artists Agnes Martin and John McLaughlin. Canadian-born Martin came to prominence in New York in the late I950s. Famous for her geometric. abstract works and rectilinear patterns. Martin continues to be an influential figure. Still painting at the age of 85 here exhibited are fourteen works on canvas completed in the last four years. Showing alongside Martin. paintings and prints by John McLaughlin (l898—I976). He is seen as America's first great abstract painter although he is not widely known to the public at large. due to his self- imposed detachment from the New York art scene. See preview.
