Ettore Sottsass And Associates Until Fri 24 Sep. (Mackintosh Gallery and studios). A look at the diverse range of work by post-war Italian designer Ettore Sottsass. In the 505 he worked on the first generation of computers for Olivetti and in the 805 he established the Memphis design group. Sottsass, now in his eighties, is still busy with new projects in his studio in MilanJ’art of Glasgow 1999.

Jessie M. King 1875-1949 Until Fri 3 Sep. (Mackintosh Building). A celebration of the life and work of one of Scotland’s most influential female artists, in this the 50th anniversary of her death. King studied at Glasgow School of Art and later went on to teach book illustration and ceramic decoration at the art school.

looking For The Perfect House Until Sat 11 Sep. (Mackintosh Building). The results of French architects association ‘Peripheriques’ challenge to 36 European architects to design an individual three- roomed house with a garage and a garden costin under £50,000.

Year Of 99 Degree Shows Highlights Until Tue 31 Aug. (Atrium Gallery). Edited highlights of this year’s Design and Craft 1999 Degree show.

Research At The Mac Until Thu 12 Aug.

A tour of the Homes For The Future site, a £10million housing development comprising one hundred homes all designed by leading architects from around the world. Both public and private housing will be created with the aim of combining innovative architecture with urban renewal. Part of Glasgow 1999. Home Until Sun 24 Oct. To complement the Homes For The Future development, this exhibition looks at the project in the context of the development of the house in the 20th century and addresses various aspects of home design for the future. Part of Glasgow 1999.

HUNTERIAN ART GALLERY

University of Glasgow, University Avenue, 330 5430. Mon—Sat 9.30am—5pm. Home to the university’s collection of art and sculpture and an on- going programme of temporary exhibitions, the Hunterian also features a re-creation of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Glasgow house which contains original furnishings. Celebration - Ten Years Of Collecting 1989-1999 Until Sat 16 Oct. To celebrate the gallery’s refurbishment, an exhibition of over 1500 works which have been added to the collections since 1989. Among the acquisitions is a rare 20th century painting by Stanley Spencer, 3 16th century Chiaroscuro oil by Luca Camiaso plus works by the Scottish colourists, furniture and designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and prints by George Stubbs and Lucian Freud.

Over 30 exhibits of furniture and lighting, artefacts, prototypes and design studies by one of the most famous designers in the world, Philippe Starck. Some of Starck’s most celebrated designs are featured in the

display including the ‘Juicy Salif’ lemon _

squeezer and the ‘l..ord Yo’ chair.

An Isolated Incident Until Sat 14 Aug. Artists Paul Carter, Chris Evans, Kate Gray and Janice McNab create new work based on the dialogue between the corporation and the individual.

THE LIGHTHOUSE 11 Mitchell Lane, 221 6362. Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat 10.30am—6pm; 'llue 11am—6pm; Thu 10.30am—8pm; Sun noon-5pm. Converted from Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s first major public building and former offices of The Herald, this new venue is the home of Scotland’s centre for Architecture, Design and the City. Providing two main exhibition galleries and smaller display areas, there are facilities for conferences, education and IT suites, a shop and a cafe. On permanent display, the Mackintosh Interpretation Centre documents the life and work of Glasgow’s most famous architect- designer. Alexander Thomson: The Unknown Genius Until Sun 19 Sep. Nicknamed ‘Greek’ due to his classical style, Alexander Thomson (1817—75) was responsible for making Glasgow a great Victorian city. His achievements however, have been overshadowed by those of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and this retrospective exhibition curated by Murray Grigor and Dr Gavin Stamp seeks to redress the balance. Part of Glasgow 1999. Vanity Cases By Philippe Starck Until Sun 31 Oct. A retrospective of the work of Philippe Starck, a prodigious designer in the 805 who shows no sign of slowing down. The exhibition features examples of his designs in miniaturised form, displayed in specially made vanity cases. Part of Glasgow 1 999. Cardonald Design Until Sat 14 Aug. Cardonald College students showcase their work including design and fashion, graphics, industrial design, stitched textiles, jewellery, ceramics and portfolio resentation. El Ultimo Grito Until Sun 15 Aug. Inspired by everyday objects, films and cartoons, El Ultimo Grito designs show their innovative approach to materials and technolo y. St Judes Safe Environment Project Tue 17—Tue 31 Aug. Pupils at St Jude’s Primary School in Easterhouse worked with architects, landscape designers and artists to discover more about design and design process. This exhibition documents the results of their studies with views of design for schools in the future. One Foot Taller Thu 19 Aug-Sun 26 Sep. (Review Gallery). Designers Will White and Katarina Barac who formed One Foot Taller design and manufacture company in 1995, present an exhibition of recycled and batch produced houseware.

LILLIE ART GALLERY

Engender Until Sat 4 Sep. Ten women artists including Joan Eardley, Jane Fyfe and Hazel Campbell explore common themes of the landscape and environment of Dumfries and Galloway.

Jad Fall' Until Thu 9 Sep. An exhibition of artwork by Jad Fair who formed the band Half Japanese back in 1974. His work has been used on album covers by The Residents, Teenage Fanclub, The Vaselines, The Pastels and Kramer.
