We have argued on many an occassion that ’club people’ get an unfair rap.
Terms like ’strange’ and ’not like normal people’ get thrown about with reckless abandon and we think that it is a blatant over-generalisation of the lowest kind. We will not, however, be submitting the following interview with Chicago house doyen Derrick Carter as evidence for our case. Please insert hotel room laughter and giggling where appropriate. So, Derrick, what is it that you do? ’I play records and I make records.’
And which to you prefer? ‘Yes. Yes, yes, yes please.’
Where are you now? 'I just got into Leeds to play at Back 2 Basics. l was last here in ’84 or ’87.’
Really? ’This is gospel you're getting but it might change. Everything needs to be time-stamped.’
You played such a huge part in the explosion of the Chicago house scene a few years back. What do you say to that? ’Thank you.’
Is that all? ‘Thank you very much. I’m a dude who does what he does and if people like it, that’s good, ’cause then I can keep on doing it.’
Who do you respect in the house scene? 'I respect people who do good things, people who can give you the fix like no one can when you need the fix.’
Who exactly? ’Sneaks, Caj, Mark from Manchester.’ (Cue laughter erupts in background, presumably from Mark.)
Are you looking forward to playing Tribal Funktion? ’Did I play there already? Only kidding. It’s my old place, the Pure place. It’s where I used to live. Kids in Edinburgh still rock and they give up love. There are always smiles at the end of the night and I like that.’
What are your plans for the next six months? ’l’m going crazy. I'm travelling until the end of September then I'm going to have two months of rest and relaxation so that I can come back invigorated to start my plans for world domination.’
Anything else? ’I have a single which is really, really, really good called "Nu Pshidt” on Classic out on 31 August tentatively, pending the artwork, which is dope!
What’s the artwork? ’Well, I do a spot of photography and I’ll be using some pictures from my [whispers into phone] very private collections.’ What are the images of? ’Shitty ’scapes cause I'm a shitty kid.’
Is that all? ’What is it with British Midland? I left with two bags of records, now I have one. What is that?’ (Simone Baird)

I Jazz Joint at Henry’s Cellar Bar. 10pm—5am. £4 (£3). Weekly. John Burgess’s Contemporary Jazz Trio (12 Aug) lay on some ultra-contemporary jazz while Dog Catcher, a scorching hot outfit, return for the Festival. DJ Unkle Fawaz guests on both ni ts.
I International Club stival at Teviot Row. 9pm-5am. £6. Weekly. Manchester’s finest house club Golden bring Norman Jay and Dean Mlson to town for a bit of a party (12 Aug) while the legendary glowstick party that is Gatecrasher (until Judge Jules rained on the parade) showcase the Euro-trance sound sweeping the nation this summer. In the four back rooms you can enjoy: drum & has, big beat, funk and soul and dub, soul and re ae.

I Vltleodrome at Cellar Bar No. 1. 9pm-1am. Free. Weekly. DJs Andy, Robert and Stuart Wemyss host an evening of down tempo beats with a dubby, jazzy feel to start, moving on to deep electronica as the evening progresses.

One of the country ’s most interesting beats labels bring to town the likes of Agent Dan, Rory Beatnik, Deckwrecka and Krash Slaughta who will have it out on as many decks as they can lay their hands on (make sure yours are bolted down). A year s a long time in clubland and after providing the capital with an underground techno haven for over twelve months now, the boys at Camel Beats have decided to take a well earned break in September allowing three dates before they call it all over, red rover. Tonight the Arabian Knights (that’s the resident DJs) welcome the return of Martin (Rub a Dub, 69).
