In the 50s he worked on the first generation of computers for Olivetti and in the 80s he established the Memphis design group. Celebration - Ten Years Of Collecting 1989-1999 Until Sat 16 Oct. To celebrate the gallery's refurbishment. an exhibition of over 1500 works which have been added to the collections since 1989. Among the acquisitions is a rare 20th century painting by Stanley Spencer. a 16th century Chiaroscuro oil by Luca Camiaso plus works by the Scottish colourists. furniture and designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and prian by George Stubbs and Lucian Freud.

W.Eugene Smith A solid retrospective of the American photojournalist who believed photography could act as a catalyst for social change. For four years prior to his death in 1978, Smith recorded the effects of mercury pollution in small Japanese fishing village. Dundee: Dundee Contemporary Arts, until Sun 29 Aug.
Alexander Thomson The 19th century architect, nicknamed 'Greek', who designed much of Victorian Glasgow gets the retrospective treatment. Converted from Charles Rennie Mackintosh‘s first major public building and former offices of The Herald. this new building will be the home of Scotland‘s centre for Architecture. Design and the City. On permanent display. the Mackintosh Interpretation Centre documents the life and work of Glasgow's most famous architect-designer.
