A new event aimed at providing a young audience with a taste of where contemporary jazz meets dance music. from salsa to drum ‘n‘ bass. Paul Harrison's Yumbambe. the Groove Diggaz and the Salsa Celtica Big Band provide the action. Numbers are limited in the bandstand itself. and although free. tickets must be pre-booked (668 2019). I The New Ladies 0 Jazz The Hub. Castlehill. Royal Mile. 473 2000. 3pm. £5. The addition of ‘new‘ to this rather wom formula is sparked by the inclusion of the likes of Subie Coleman. Nicola King and Australia's G.T. Nash. alongside Edith Budge. Sophie Bancroft and Cathie Rae.
I Tommy Smith Sextet The Liquid Room. Victoria Street. 225 2564. 8pm. £10. This could be one of the real highlights of the festival. Scotland‘s leading jazz creator is joined by special guests Bobby Watson. lngrid Jensen and Greg Hutchinson in a setting which should add up to much more than a casual blowing date.
I Claire Martin The Hub. Castlehill. Royal Mile. 473 2000. 8pm. £10. Don’t look for recent album guest Noel Gallagher to make an appearance. but this excellent singer will be joined by a string quartet as well as her trio for this date.
I The Blind Boys Of Alabama Queen‘s Hall. Clerk Street. 668 2019. 8pm.
£1 1.50—£15. The veteran outfit are giants of the gospel scene and sold out their earlier visits to the festival. at St Giles and Greyfriars Kirk. They appear in the unsanctified setting of a concert hall this time around. but since the Queen‘s Hall is a former church. they should be right at home.
I Nigel Clark Trio Counting House. West Nicolson Street. 668 2019. 8pm. £7.50. Guitarist Nigel Clark leads his new acoustic trio. featuring the rhythm section from his electric quintet. bassist Ewan Vernal and drummer Mike Bradley.

Larry Adler
may be well into his 805, but he remains the unchallenged maestro of the moothie. He performs wonders on the instrument which is technically known as chromatic harmonica, but which he prefers to call simply mouth organ, and teams up here with Ken Peplowski and Brian Kellock.

The king of Celtic soul has been known to dabble in jazz from time to time. including a controversial concert at this festival with the BBC Big Band a couple of years ago. This one features a small jazz group of his own picking. but Van usually comes out sounding just like Van. whatever the setting. It was heading for a sell out. so check first.
I John Rae's Celtic Feet The Liquid Room. Victoria Street. 225 2564. 8pm. £8.50. Drummer John Rae‘s new band have already released their debut album on Caber Music. and mix jazz and folk in imaginative (if not yet always fully integrated) fashion.
