Side orders The Soup Dragon
The fortunes of the former W.J. Christies on Edinburgh's West Port have been fluctuating of late. It was shut down for a while but recently re- opened under the name of the Soup Dragon.
For years Christies was bit of a favourite with students from the nearby art college. offering an alternative to the more boisterous boozers of the Grassmarket. A change of ownership saw it make the move towards becoming what was termed a ‘fun pub'. but this didn't seem to be a huge success.
In its new guise as the Soup Dragon. things seemed to have mellowed somewhat. The music has moved down a couple of gears and large candles throw a warm light compared to the garish purple strips which used to illuminated thejoint. If it doesn't drop too many clangers, then the Soup Dragon may well see its fortunes rise again.

Bar38
While Edinburgh has had the opportunity of usmg Bar 38's unisex toilets for nearly a year now. Glasgow has OHlyJUSt had the pleasure.
The washroom IS reached by descending a spiral staircase which has a chandelier reaching down the length of it; all of which must make spending a penny a more unusual experience than normal.
Naturally, there is more to Bar 38 than the tOilet facilities and customers can gaze in wonder at the fabric sculptures which adorn the walls and add a flash of colour to the blond wood fittings.
The menu has been revamped to include dishes such as sweet pepper and lime chicken kebab with mint couscous at £8.95 and Sicilian sausage with poppy seed mash and red pepper gravy at E5. There's an emphasis on Mediterranean styles of cooking which will make a pleasant change from the all conquering Pacific Rim ideas which are everywhere at the moment.
An area at the back furnished with loads of sofas which is ideal for recuperating after one sweet pepper and lime chicken kebab too many.
