COMEDY PREVIEW Michael Redmond

Classy Comedy Club, Canon's Gait, Thu 8 Jul.

Surreally'saying something: Michael Redmond

You might remember the classic early episode of Father Ted titled Entertaining Father Stone, in which the dull and taciturn ecclesiastical fellow named came close to driving Ted and his cohorts mad by his simple imperviousness to all forms of badinage. The guest star in question was Michael Redmond, a far more relaxed guy than his character, and an extremely accomplished stand up whose performances are rarer than they should be, since he spends much of his time writing comedy.

The Dublin-born comic, who has learned his craft over the past decade through radio and television scripting, mixed with stand up performances in Ireland and London, isn’t the usual professional Irishman. ‘I don't set out to be Irish, though that’s obviously my background, so it comes into it,’ comments Redmond, 'but the style is more about rambling anecdotes, mixed with a few one-liners: it’s not really political, or anything like that.’ Redmond is the kind of unaggressive, non-invasive comic who relies on, and usually successfully builds audience empathy, pulling one into labyrinthine tales on a great variety of subjects, usually working from his audience for inspiration: ‘I like to look for a reaction from the audience but I don‘t set out to hassle

them, in fact I don’t often get heckled.’

Redmond’s comedy takes some surreal turns. The stand up who most influences him is Steve Wright, while his favourite television comedy is Monty Python, so one can clearly see where the surrealism comes in. This will be your one chance to see Redmond, who will top a bill which also features Craig Hill and Susanne Fraser, since he will not be performing in the Fringe - so catch it while you can.
