4 Hero - legends of their time, and their time might be coming ‘round again. Rory Weller gets the ‘ lowdown.
Name 4 Hero, but they go in for a nice line of ’secret names'.
Real names Dego McFarlane and Marc Clair.
Place of residence North London.
How and when started? The two of them met in '88 as DJs on Strong island pirate radio, playing acid, techno, rare groove and hip hop, which directly led to the duo recording together.
What was their first release? They set up their own label Reinforced (which they still run) and put out a string of darkcore techno tracks before putting out the deeply dark, ’Mr Kirk's Nightmare' which is cited as being a seminal bridge between hardcore and the emerging jungle sound.
Who else was on Reinforced? They happened to nurture the talents of one particular Whippersnapper: Goldie. What were you on about up there about secret names? As well as being 4 Hero, the duo have also called themselves: Jacobs Optical Stairway, Tom & Jerry, Nu Era, Cold Mission and (separately) Tek 9 (Belgian SSR) and Manix.
Why all the disguises? ‘It used to be that you couldn't do loads of different things under one name,’ Dego explains 'because you’d get a very narrow minded response. It‘s getting better now though, i think people are getting bored of hearing one thing.’
What are we hearing from them now? On Giles Peterson‘s Talkin‘ Loud label they're at the forefront of the nu jazz scene, dipping right back and pushing sound forward. They’ve made the dancefloor detonators, got the rewinds, but now they're making music to last. Have they any local connection? They're quite keen on Glasgow's Funk D’Void (Soma). On the CD ROM that accompanied their '98 album Two Pages they say this about Funk D'Void's 'lack Me Off’: 'The man's made it with heart. Larz shows a real love for techno that‘s demonstrated through this piece’. Nice. fl 4 Hero 0/ at The Perfect Summer Groove at Queen Margaret Union on Sat 19 Jun.
