POETIC DRAMA Sweeping Out The
Dark
Glasgow: The Arches, until Sat 12 Jun *** This is an interesting but ultimately unfulfilling theatrical experiment. When Stephen McCreadie actually presents the poetry of Edwin Morgan as theatrical monologues or dialogues, the piece works reasonably well. Early in the production we are treated to an inventive interpretation of ’The Mummy’ with Russell Watters cutting a figure at once impressive and vaguely ridiculous as the bandage~swathed ancient Egyptian, stirred to life by Frances Ferry's twisted museum curator. Unfortunately, the strong staging
and design elements which give the scene its resonance are too often absent from subsequent passages. Bereft of stage business or props, the actors are frequently reduced to gazing into the middle distance and simply spouting forth poetry. Superb the poetry may be — particularly ’In The Snack Bar’ and 'When You Go’ - but left alone, it is the stuff of recitals or actors’ audition pieces, and does not
stand up as coherent drama.
Having said all that, the climactic ’Stobhill' sequence is

effective enough to redeem much of the earlier
disappointment. Here, the sparseness of the production works in its favour, being ideally suited to the courtroom testimonies which combine to form an account of a botched abortion. It's an account all the more shocking when you remember that it’s all true, based on an actual incident in Glasgow's past. The cast are given something substantial to work with, the audience are hooked, and the
play as a whole snatches a kind of victory from the jaws of
