ACTRESS GILLIAN ANDERSON is currently in Scotland filming The House Of Mirth, an adaptation of Edith Wharton’s novel, directed by Terence Davies (The Long Day Closes). The X-Fi/es star will be joined here on the eight-week shoot by a
high profile cast including Eric Stoltz, :
Dan Aykroyd, Anthony LaPaglia and Elizabeth McGovern. The story, set in turn of the century New York, casts Anderson as a socialite who is falsely accused of having an affair with a married man.
After initially considering Philadelphia and Baltimore, the film’s producers were lured to Scotland by locations that still retain something of the prosperous merchant era. Among the sites used will be the City Chambers in Glasgow and a large country house near North Berwick. The $5 million movie has seven funding partners, including the Scottish Arts Council and the Glasgow Film Fund, and its executive pfoducer is Edinburgh-based Bob Last. For the duration of the shoot, Anderson - who claims to have Scottish blood on her grandfather's side — will live in Glasgow with her four-year-old daughter. Rumours of an investigative trip to the 'Bonnybridge Triangle' are purely speculative.
CAPERCAILLIE, JAMES GRANT. Horse, Peatbog Faeries, Salsa Celtica, the BT Scottish Ensemble and Albanian opera singer Besa Berberi are among the performers who will take to the stage of the Edinburgh Playhouse on Wed 30 Jun for the Concert For Kosovo. The event hopes to raise over £30,000 that will go directly to support programmes in the refugee camps of Albania and Macedonia. THE SCOTTISH POETRY LIBRARY opens in its new premises in Crichton's Close (opposite Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh) on Fri 18 Jun. The new building, refurbished to a total cost of £791,683, holds an astonishingly diverse and comprehensive collection of poetry, and can be contacted on 0131 557 2876.
SCANNING THE CITY, a new CD- ROM developed by Strathclyde University and commissioned by Glasgow 1999: UK City of Architecture and Design, will give Glasgow's youngest citizens the chance to take a virtual tour of the city's public art and urban design. Using stills photography, video and sound, the multimedia product takes users on a detailed tour of Glasgow’s most famous places, focusing attention on architecture and design. The CD-ROM will be distributed free to the city's schools and community groups.
MIKE FIGGIS, DIRECTOR of Leaving Las Vegas, will come to Glasgow later this year to give a public masterclass on writing music for film. Figgis - who also composes the jazz-tinged scores for his movies - will visit Glasgow Film Theatre as part of the new Movie Music scheme, which aims to encourage musicians and composers based in Scotland to write for film and television. The part-time course comprises six workshops between September and December. To be selected, applicants should submit two copies of a full CV, any existing recordings or sheet music of their own work and a written response to their favourite film score to: Movie Music, Scottish Music Information Centre, 1 Bowmont Gardens, Glasgow, G12 9LR.
