Past, tense
When Celtic and Rangers last lined up for the Scottish Cup Final, The List was cheering on the terraces.
July 1989. Six months before taking its place as Europe’s City of Culture, Glasgow was witnessing scenes of barbarism and puerility which belonged more to the 16905. Rangers had just made their first big-name signing of the Catholic persuasion in 116 years' existence and the club's fans burned scarves ouside ibrox while Celtic supporters grafittied the M8 with bawdy humour at the expense of Maurice Johnston. Bad enough that Johnston had once been a Parkhead hero, but his decision to leave the tranquility of Nantes to join the Souness revolution in Govan had come after he had been paraded around Paradise in a Celtic strip.
Johnston had been announced as Celtic's saviour prior to the 1989 Scottish Cup Final, giving the team a much-needed boost with Rangers seemingly on their relentless way to a domestic treble. This match was to go down as one of the most hyped Old Firm clashes in years (until the next one came along) and, in the event, one of the dullest.
Unsurprisingly, the game’s only goal came from a bungling error as Rangers’ defender Gary Stevens decided to pass a chunk of turf rather than the ball back to keeper Chris Woods, and permanent under-achiever Joe Miller nipped in to spark celebratory relief at the Celtic end. The fact that the goal should have been disallowed after Hoops' captain Roy Aitken took a throw-in which was clearly Rangers’ ball merely added to the sense of hollow victory.
That result only made Rangers more determined in the subsequent seasons, as they marched on to nine League titles in succession and Celtic went through a series of less than successful managers — Billy McNeill was followed by Messrs Brady, Macari and Burns — before Wim Jansen, a figure unexposed to the peculiarities of the Old Firm, was able to bring genuine success back to Parkhead. And as recent events have shown, personalities may alter but that fury remains. (Brian Donaldson)
