FUNNY AND PLAYFUL ARE NOT THE FIRST WORDS one associates vvith the Work of David Cronenberg. the (‘anadian filmmaker who gave us the venereal horror of Shivers. the gynaecological dread of Dead Ringers and the perverse auto-eroticism of ('rus/z. Not that his films are vvithout humour: on the contrary. there is a droll side to his fertile imagination that seeps into even his most cerehral vvork.

His latest film. eXistenZ. adopts an almost self-mocking tone. At the same time it continues to explore his perennial fascination with such intellectual questions as the fluidity of our self-created identities. the blurring of the line between fantasy and reality. and the vvay that new technologies can fundamentally alter our sense of who vve are -— and vvho vve might become.

I'm going to get pretty upset. because I'm going to feel that they don‘t get it. But vvhy that should he. I have no idea.’
