COMEDY PREVIEW Mel & Sue

Stirling: MacRoberr Arts Centre, Tue 27 Apr.

‘It feels like we've been released like Elsa from Born Free,’ says Mel Giedroyc, the blonde one in the comedy duo that is Mel and Sue. ’We’re like lionesses released into the wild from the constraints of daytime television.

It's fantastic.’

For the last two years Mel and Sue have been stunning Channel 4's daytime television audiences with their Light2, and then Late Lunch. Stunning them with their irony, wit and general ability to reach out and turn accidents into hilarious gags. Accidents which lesser presenters, incapable of working in the friable world of live television, would have studiously ignored as potential piles of monkey jism. Accidents which Luscious Mel and Sexy Sue would hold up with glee for their audience’s entertainment.

Now they’re back on stage and into the comedy fray. They've grabbed the Late Lunch band and embarked on a brand new tour, and it feels good. It's the morning after the first night, and Mel's doing all the talking because Sue's mike went down half way through the show and her throat is

somewhat sore.

’I hope that people aren't going to come along and expect cooking and guests like we had on the telly,’ she says. ‘It's sketch-based stuff, we've got two war time biddies, who are obsessed with gooses gizzards and chicken claws. We have two girls from 1962 who are hep chicks, just moved to London from suburbia. I am doing a very, very, in yer face, 805 stand up comedienne, Sue is doing Dr Susan Howerdling, the Viennese Sexologist.’

All top-drawer Mel and Sue, for those who fell in love with the shows they brought to the Fringe between 1992 and 97. And for those who glimpsed their contribution to BBCZ's Gimme Gimme Gimme recently, it won’t be much of a surprise that Sue can’t wait to get those costumes back on.

'Ab man, it felt good, the stiff, crispness of an A-line burgundy uniform always does it for me,’ she says, with a smile, ’There’s some extremely interesting costumes. I must say.’ (Thom Dibdin)
