SCOTTISH ARTS NETWORK (formerly SALVO) has issued all prospective candidates for the Scottish Parliament with a manifesto of its own. The document calls upon MSPs — whatever their party — to adopt a number of policies relating to the country's cultural life.
Among the issues addressed is the administration of public funding. The network believes that current bodies such as Scottish Screen, Scottish Museums and the SAC should be replaced — or at least re- organised — with a ’simpler and more transparent system’. They further advocate the appointment of a Minister Of Culture, Arts and Broadcasting. Although at present the parliament has no influence in television and radio, the manifesto insists this should be remedied immediately: whether Stuart Cosgrove, for one, agrees, is another matter (see main article).
The document’s primary objective however, is to foster an atmosphere where public funding of the arts is viewed as investment, rather than subsidy. The issues raised will be discussed by candidates at public meetings in their constituencies, including one at the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh on Tue 27 Apr, at 7pm.

The collection features the first six issues of the comic, which chronicles the ’surreal yet unnervineg real' world of Martin Nitrain. As well as the musical

Organiser lain Macdonald has apologised to disgruntled punters for overcrowding and dysfunctional toilets: ’I was responsible for the programming and miscalculated the number of people who wanted to be in the Potterrow at the same time. GLASWEGIAN SCULPTOR GEORGE
3 WYLIE unveiled his latest work in
Govan earlier this month. The Govan Fair Association commissioned the piece twelve months ago, in the hope of providing the community with a permanent symbol of its own hopes and aspirations. Wylie designed a 15ft tall ship’s bow, complete with a

entitled The Launch. The piece was then built by workers at the Kvaerner Govan shipyard. After the yard's recent closure was announced, Wylie expressed concern, saying: ’I hope this will be a monument to the ships that will be built, rather than ships that have been built.’
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR . . . the line up for this year's Cannes Film Festival, which could include Scottish filmmaker Lynn Ramsey's feature debut Ratcatcher.
