Jon Pleased Wimmin has left his (rocks in the closet and is concentrating now on playing his trademark eclectic sets. Rory Weller catches up with one of Britain’s favourite Dis.
Name? Jon Cooper aka Jon Pleased Wimmin.
Date of birth? 28.05.99.
Place of birth? Brazzaville in the Belgian Congo — seriously. Occupation? DJ, producer, friend to the stars and infamous (ex) frock wearer. How did it all start for him? Along with the other Pleased Wimmin he was notorious around pie-house clubs like Kinky Gerlinky and Taboo as a, full time podium hogger and hedonism junky. So how did he get behind the decks? The former fashion and art student was given his first break by Danny Rampling at his weekly night Glam. Jon impressed with his genre jumping mix, which is still his trademark. It wasn’t unusual to hear Derrick May tracks next to something like, eh-hem, a-ha from the top trannie. '
But the dresses are gone now? Pretty much hand in hand with his fame going stellar came a toning down of the drag act. He still cuts quite a dash and considers a trip across the Atlantic to buy a pair of shoes not excessive.
And the stars? His legendary night Pleased at London's Velvet Underground was a favourite haunt of the famous and influential. He's Died for Ghost fashion shows, The Fashion Cafe opening in London and Peter Stringfellow's birthday. Last time we bumped into him was at The Ministry where Martine McCutcheon (aka Tiffany) was one of the party swigging champers in the DJ box.
What about production work? He’s been a bit Quite for a while. He hit the charts a few years back with Passion, has remixed Marilyn Manson not long ago and recently was working on a guitar based project. He has, however, achieved silver discs for three of his mix 035.
He’s got a bit of a rep for being cheesy — valid point? Not at all, he might drop some old classics, but he does it in a new, inspiring way, faithful to the dance floor, the underground and himself all at the same time.
