it may even deter others from attempting the role in the future, which would be a pity since celebrity hairdresser and would be mammy Barbs Marshall is such an inspired creation.
The supporting characters are never dwarfed by Barbs, however. They simply take turns entering her orbit and finding an atmosphere in which to thrive. Perhaps fittingly for a comedy whose heroine is in dire need of some male body fluids, the jokes come thick and fast. Most are very good and some, notably those shared by Barbs and her formidable mother (Anne Scott Jones), are funny enough to cause internal bleeding. It will be interesting to see how their more Glasgow-centric gags play to an Edinburgh audience, but material of this quality should transcend nations, never mind cities.
Some critiCism has been levelled at the stereotypical
attributes of gay character Brendan Boyle (John Kazek), but
this seems like knee jerk liberalism, given that all the characters are pitched as larger than life. Not that this should detract from Liz Lochhead's achievement here: an artist who paints in broad strokes remains an artist.
