Brodrick Haldane (Arcadia £12.99) ** t
From 1933 onwards, proto-paparazzo Brodrick Haldane made it his mission to sidle into all of Europe’s best parties, top hotels and most glittering circles armed with fine manners, good looks and a camera. Little wonder that Cecil Beaton dubbed him ‘the man who invented modern society photography'.
Based on conversations with Edinburgh Evening News columnist Roddy Martine, Haldane's chatty autobiographical reminiscences are an anecdotal breeze. The great, good and merely insufferany privileged waft through these pages in quick succession, from movie stars (Chaplin, Dietrich) to leaders (the British Royal Family and America’s equivalent — the Kennedys and writers (Nabokov, Shaw).
There is perhaps too much ’and then 1 met Viscount This and dined with Lord and Lady That’ and precious little about the actual art of photography. Yet through several seas of dropped names, Haldane (born into Scottish aristocracy, died three years ago, aged 83) emerges as more than pleasant company. (DH)
