Four play
Peter James
Head resident at Edinburgh's Luvely, Peter James has been spinning there since George Paterson first saw him
playing at Queen’s in London three years
ago. Since then, his hard house/ trance sets have helped take Luver from its days at Club Mercado with 300 punters to its current prime position at Wilkie
House. Stilt based in London, Peter plays
around the country. Luver celebrates its third birthday on Sat 23 Jan.
D Tune: ‘Sirenade‘ (2 Play) Classic rolling Euro trance breakdowns and sirens all ove c.Rocks. ’
Friends Lovers Family: ‘Tribute' (tush) Re-worked in ’97, the Quietman mix stands out as closest to the original and still excellent.
Stanny Franssen: ‘Between The Lines' (Conform)
Newish minimal EP. Funky as hell and sexy too. Not too industrial though - a real mood maker.
Commander Tom: 'Are Am (llioom)
What is there to say -— classic German trance. I first heard this at Trade four years ago. Scared me absolutely
senseless; still a treat when dropped.

Itching for it: The Scratch Perverts — 1st Rate, Prime Cuts, Tony Vegas and Mr Thing
’lnitially it didn’t take off. It kind of came together then it fell apart soon afterwards. It was difficult because we lived in different cities and everyone was kind of doing their own thing; everyone was on different paths,’ says DJ Prime Cuts of The Scratch Perverts, the DJ team which is skyrocketing supersonic—style world-wide. Despite this less than auspicious start, The Scratch Perverts are now one of the tightest team around.
It’s 1996 and this hip hop fanatic bloke, Tony Vegas, is working in the London record shop Mr Bongos. He has a vision of creating a super-crew of the best 015 around. In his sights are DJs Prime Cuts, 1st Rate, Renegade and Mr Thing. While The Scratch Perverts are slow to get it together, get it together they do and, after two short years, they come a close second in the 1998 ITF Routine World Championships. While the team shines, each of the DJs continue to enter in national and international competitions and the awards list just keeps getting longer.
’We are the best crew around, without a doubt,’ claims Prime Cuts, who‘s currently in the studio with UNKLE’s James Lavelle. ’By quite a long way as well. That’s not a big-headed statement, l just don’t see anyone near us. There’s such a lack of 015 who are organised in Britain.’
With the UK hip hop culture becoming increasingly popular both commercially and underground, there’s pressure at the top to keep the music fresh and innovative. 'Now that we are in the spotlight, it is very much up to us to keep this thing moving and we will,’ says Prime Cuts. 'People look up to us to deliver the goods. It’s 1999 and we are going to attack with all guns blazing. Again.’ (Simone Baird)
