What made the groovin’ grade this fortnight

Blockster: 'You Should Be' (Sound Of Ministry)

Ignore the Radio Edit (if you can), with Brandon Block's straight-forward layering of the Bee-Gees over a house beat, and head for Blockster’s Club Mix which drags the tempo a tad and makes the brothers Gibb far more sexy and funky than they deserve.

Lucid: ‘Crazy' (ffrr)

Stand tip and dance to this swmging and funky little number. The radio mix IS easy and atmospheric, Madonna- through-a-fuzz-box simplicrty is retained in Lucid’s own mixes, but it’s Nalin and Kane's mixes which wrap you up all warm and golden. Stunning.

Surreal Madrid: 'Girls Of The Night EP' (Fused And Bruised)

Working the big beat gold-mine, Surreal Madrid know which of the Chemicals' buttons to press anu Bentley's rhythms to ace. The title track is standard block~rockin' fare, but ‘We Only Have The Rhythm' demonstrates greater depth and ShOuld generate much dance frenzy.

Ian Pooley: 'What’s Your Number’ (V2)

Poole's silkrly combined disco samples are instantly forgettable, deep house fare. But Bob Sinclar redeems it with some elasticity on his Paradise Mixx while Jazzanova opens it wide up and plunders as much funk as can be found in its depths.

Mirrorball: 'Given Up' (Multiply) More disco; The Three Degrees' ’Given Up, Given ln', this time. Huggy Burger Queen keeps all the disco shenanigans

5 right up-front‘rn a fun-filled Hugster

mix whrle Olav Basoskr's dub is a glam- drenched, pouring podium pleaser. Gemini: 'Take Your Time EP' (Cyclo) A ripper from Spencer Kincy with four prime cuts to gurde you through the night. There's pure, underground house in 'Karma', a singing bass line on the future funk of the title track, the self-explanatory ‘Return Of The Jack’ and a deep, spacey, minimal groove rn 'Where You Belong’. Reviewer this issue: Thom Dibdin.

Manga

\

Congratulations to Manga, La Belle Angele's hugely popular monthly drum 8r bass night, who celebrate their third birthday on Fri 22 Jan. What’s more, Glaswegian jungle enthusiasts can join the party the following evening when Manga play Pure at The Arches. 'The last sixteen months have seen the club come on in leaps and bounds,’ says resident DJ Kid. Promoter G-Mac agrees: 'Since going monthly, Manga has just kept getting stronger.’

1998 saw the club play host to sell-out events such as Roni Size’s Reprazent showcase and a Radio One live broadcast. Manga now boasts a membership of 1200, a Website that receives over 1000 hits per week and exclusive access to new footage from Manga videos for their distinctive in-club visuals. With foreign dates and the launch of a new Scottish drum 81 bass label, Invade, planned for later this year, Manga looks set to get even bigger in 1999. (Sarah Lowndes) Manga’s third birthday at La Belle Ange/e, Fri 22 Jan and at Pure, The Arches, Sat 23 Jan.
