Brown's
Twenty five years ago, the first Brown’s restaurant opened its doors to a curious public in Bristol. A quarter of a century on and several restaurants later, the first Scottish branch of the business has bustled into existence on Edinburgh’s George Street.
Primarily a restaurant with a bar rather than a bar with a restaurant, Brown's aims to be a comfortable, welcoming sort of place rather than an ultra-modern, flash spot. Sited on an 18th century, grade 8 listed burlding, Brown's is decked out in a calming mix of creams, mahogany tables and leather banquettes. Big fans turn lazily on the ceiling and cause a slight flutter among the abundant foliage. The burlding is actually situated around a covered garden courtyard and, come more inclement weather, lovers of the great outdoors can have their cake and eat it al fresco, as it were.
They are keen on atmosphere at Brown’s and, as the clock draws on, the lighting and music changes to suit the pace of the day: calm in the afternoon and building up a bit as the evening deepens and becomes the night.
Brown’s menu is qune a traditional British affair, With the occasional nod to the Med. Lamb steak served with rosemary and Oxford sauce is typical of the sort of hale and hearty food which they specialise in. Some of Brown's meals have become signature dishes and they point With pride to the sturdy likes of their steak, mushroom and Guinness pie, while a range of pastas, salads and daily speCials offer more international tastes. There's also a healthy range of fish dishes from simple swordfish steaks With a pesto salsa to gravadlax With a sweet mustard and dill dressing. The prices are reasonable With most of the main courses hovering around the £7—£9 mark and sweets such as sticky toffee pudding With butterscotch sauce Will ruin your waistline for a mere £3.35.
The Wine list is more extensive than you might suppose with 26 bins offering house Wine from £8.95 a bottle up to an ’89 Chateau St Germain at £21.50. If you really want a blowout, then the Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque champagne is £75 a pop.
