HOGMANAY COMEDY
Don't spend the season greeting
We all know a spirit of good cheer makes the bleak midwinter bearable. So it’s heartening to see that Edinburgh's hardworking comedy crews at The Stand and the Gilded Balloon have sacrificed their own venal pleasures to bring a smile to our faces and a laugh to our bellies.
At The Stand, there’s no let-up in the seasonal festivities. Following last year’s popular Hootfest, Hogmanay Hootfest II runs for six nights, from Sun 27 Dec until Sat 2 Jan. Bob Doolally, sports commentator from Hell, performs his solo show every night; and hosts a Hogmanay Special on New Year’s Eve, featuring special guests and a gut-busting buffet. The show runs until 10.30pm, allowing you a full 90 minutes to get bladdered before the Bells.
On the other five nights, Bill Dewar and Brian Hennigan revive their Fringe hit show, The Useless Guide To Scotland; and there’s a late- night mixed bill of stand-up introduced by Jane Mackay, the Stand's feisty bosswoman and regular compere. She’ll take a firm hand, both with the audience and her acts, who include Parrot (dubbed 'the funniest man alive' in this issue’s Laughing Bag), Kevin Hayes, Stand regular John Flint, and Paul McNeill. who made his Stand debut in October.
Meanwhile, the Gilded Balloon is staging three high-profile stand- up gigs at the Queen's Hall. Now one of Scotland's busiest broadcasters, likeable but razor-tongued Fred MacAulay (see Box Pops, page 130) grabs the mike on Mon 28. The following night, hairy-arsed berserker Phil Kay lays seige to the stage, but not before expat Irishman Michael Redmond has jollied us up with his gloom- laden blarney. Another Emerald Isle exile, slinky Ed Byrne, closes the season to be jolly on Wed 30.
As Saint Nicholas will be saying as he hangs up his sack for another eleven months, ’Ho, ho, ho!’ (Andrew Burnet)
