Childie of the 60s: Patti Clare in The Killing Of Sister George
SAPPHIC CLASSIC
The Killing Of Sister George Glasgow: Citizens’ Circle Studio, until Wed 23 Dec s sir it
'I'm being kept prisoner by my lesbian lover', 'I was a teenage mom’, ’My soap star girlfriend is driVing me nuts'. You don't have to give them titles to appreciate that the episodes of The Jerry Springer Show which flash across a TV screen at the start of The Killing Of Sister George are extremely appropriate to a play in which loving relationships crackle with guilty confessions and constantly threaten to
explode with Violence.
Frank Marcus’s play is probably best known as the 1969 film starring Beryl Reid and Susannah York, but the tiny Circle Studio at the Citz lends the material a fittingly smothering ambience. When June Buckridge, star of the hit TV soap App/ehurst, begins to suspect her character is being killed off, she nosedives into a spiral of drink and paranOIa. This, in turn, fuels dark power-games and manipulations With her live-in lesbian lover, the infantile Alice McNaught.
Every actress in Kenny Miller’s production puts in a faultless performance. Anne Myatt and Patti Clare as June and Alice are particularly impressive, revealing the nuances of their relationship With subtlety and significance, veering between touching love and chilling betrayal. But even the secondary characters are played with tangible enthusiasm and brilliant comic timing
Really, the only problem With The Killing Of Sister George is the script itself. Like Joe Orton, Marcus's WittiCisms arise mostly from barbed comments and the exchange of insults, but, unlike Orton, the ineVitable descent into darkness never seems either complete or believable. This play is tepid — far from hilarious, but also lacking emotional impact. They may be making the oh-so-90s gesture of referencing Jerry Springer but, frankly, this isn't too hot for TV.
