Hard to 'review' a comedy club for which the bill changes on a weekly basis, but if compere Billy Bonkers (real name Yvonne, allegedly) can regularly attract the calibre of performers on offer when The List showed up, he and his audience can only be onto a winner.
Yvonne himself proved much funnier than his opening gambit - ’l'm shite and I know lam’ - suggested, particularly when leading the audience in a rousing stomp through ’Plastic Jesus’. The punters were well oiled but largely well behaved, with just enough heckling to keep the acts on their toes, but not so much as to turn the occasion into a slanging match.
That said, you'd need to be a pretty cocksure heckler to trade barbs with turns as accomplished as Lee Ness (camp, twisted, hilarious) or Mark Bratchpiece (Jewish, deadpan, hilarious). Top-of-the-bill John Gillick earned his encore with the kind of deceptively precise musings and righteous anger that made Dylan Moran a star. Maybe best of all was Hamish Macdonald, seizing the open mike slot and having the brass ca/ones to structure his entire act around regional TV presenters of the early-to-mid- 705. This was only Macdonald’s second solo public appearance, but he's
definitely a name to watch out for.
In such entertaining company, the two and a half hours fly by, and you get plenty of belly laughs for your fiver. The only drawback stems from draconian licensing laws, which mean that there’s no chance for a post-gig beer and chinwag about the high old time you and your mates have just had. That minor (and unavoidable) quibble aside, this is a top night out, and the most fun you'll ever have in a hot smoky cellar full of strangers.
