sarkinéi‘a chord in our hearts this fortnight.
ROCK
PJ Harvey Her new album Is This Desire? is a lot more uneven than To Bring You My Love but if the recent show at Edinburgh Festival is anything to go by then she can still mesmerise with that primal voice. Glasgow: Barrow/and, Wed 9 Dec. Manic Street Preachers Rock stars with a conscience are a rare commodity so hats off to the Manics for digging deeper than the usual fluff. Just remember to head to the bar for the more dreary of the tracks from the new album. Support comes from the stonking Catatonia. Glasgow: SECC, Sat 72 Dec.
James Often unfairly tagged as nothing more than a crap student band, James are easily in the top five when it comes to live gigs. Still not sure about the 'Sit Down’ remix though. The Stereophonics support. G/asgow: SECC, Mon 74, Tue 75 Dec
JAZZ

Scott Hamilton and Dave McKenna Neither of these celebrated US stars are exactly strangers to Scottish stages, but the combination should spark some fireworks in a mainstream vein. Glasgow: Moir Hall, Sat 72 Dec; Edinburgh: Queen’s Hall, Fri 7 7 Dec.
