it’s a sure thing that you’ve heard some of their music. Here are the essentials on trance outfit The Quietman.
Name? Quietman.
Real Name? Larry Lush (keyboards) aka Lawrence Elliot-Potter and Will (William) Frost (artist and producer).
Home? London.
Labels? Currently only one, really. Platipus.
It was a beautiful moment . . . Well, maybe. They met while Wilf was doing a 01 support slot for Rise, a band Larry was engineering for. They formed Friends, Lovers & Family shortly afterwards.
Friends. Lovers . . . who? As FLF they released ‘Children's Stories‘ which was initially released on Beat Freak before being licensed to Rising High Records. When Rising High’s A&R man refused in his infinite wisdom one of their singles, it was immediately picked up by Platipus and Quietman emerged. You see?
Ahh, that rings a bell! And so it should. It's a safe bet that you've heard either 'Now And Zen’ or 'The Sleeper', both released from Quietman’s first album Plastic Gourd to much critical acclaim. More importantly, loads of people danced to them.
Their latest work? Shhh was releaSed in April this year and resulted in an inordinate amount of ooh-ing and 33h- ing from all sides of Clubland, despite being pigeonholed in the ambient and trance genres.
It's all just a musical thing, isn’t it? Well no, actually. Will is currently completing a BA Hons in Fine Art and uses his artistic talent in their live PA's. As Larry plays the music, Wilf paints impressions on a blank canvas. His work features on the sleeve of Shhh.
What else do they get up to? Larry runs his own label with Paul Marlow aka Mr 02 called Lush Recordings. Together with Will they record under different pseudonyms. The label is affiliated With the Truelove Label Collective which runs on the common premise that artists express themselves best without interference or restriction.
And the future? They will take a break this winter to record new material and hope to have a full-scale UK tour underway next summer.
