GLASGOW ARTIST RICHARD Wright's work redesigning the new Tron Bar has been recognised with a prestigious award from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. The Glasgow University graduate shares the honour - and £150,000 in cash — with four other British talents. The bar is only the first stage of the Tron's redevelopement, with the restaurant re-opening on Monday 9 November, and the theatre itself relaunched in 1999. Meanwhile, the venue will make use of all available space to stage new productions and musical events. See the next issue of The List for more details.
ANYBODY LOOKING TO spend Hogmanay in Edinburgh this year is going to have to cough up, as all the free street party passes have now been allocated. The Hogmanay box office received sackloads of applications between 15 September and 7 October, and has now begun issuing passes on a first come, first served basis. Other avenues remain open, however, including membership of the First Foot Club (phone 0131 473 1999 for an application). Tickets for many other still-to-be-announced events will include street party access. Keep an eye on The List for further details as the party-hard season approaches.
A CELEBRITY CHEF rustling up chow for Tony Blair may not seem like news, but when the nosebag in question takes place in Shanghai as part of a DTI trade initiative, that's a different story. Nick (Wild Harvest) Nairn prepared 10,000 items of food - all made from ingredients flown in from Britain - for the PM and representatives of the Chinese business community. The event formed part of the 'Flavour of Britain' exhibition — designed and
co-ordinated by Glasgow's own Graven Images company - which promotes the work of UK companies manufacturing in China, as well as extolling the virtues of British food industry expertise.
SOUTH KOREAN ARTIST Hong Song Dam was honoured this week by the city which played a major part in securing his freedom. A campaign begun by Amnesty International in 1990 to tie in with Glasgow's year as European City of Culture bore fruit some three years later when Hong was finally released from prison. His only crime had been to submit slides of his artwork to a youth festival in North Korea, but he was arrested, tortured and jailed. This was the 43-year-old's first visit to Scotland, and to mark the occasion a reception was held at the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art where several of his woodcuts are on display. For information about Amnesty's ongoing campaigns, contact Rosemary Burnett on 0131 557 8501.
BBC SCOTLAND'S ONE-OFF drama Golden Wedding was recognised in the 1998 Mental Health Media Awards. Director John Tiffany, best known for his theatrical achievements at Edinburgh's Traverse, feels the project — broadcast earlier this year - owes its success to a determination to avoid the traditional pitfalls of ’issue' movies. ’This is a love story, it's not about Alzheimer's,’ he told The List. ‘lt’s about the emotional history of a married couple. Only by understanding that can you appreciate the impact the disease has had on their lives. That's what gives the film such power.‘
KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED . . . for the fate of Glasgow‘s crumbling Virginia Galleries and the £27 million Marks 8: Spencer development next door.
