On a Sunday afternoon, there are three ingredients imperative to curing a thumping hangover — good food, another drink and a bit of a laugh.
A perfect solution is Whose Lunch Is It Anyway? at The Stand. Spend a lazy couple of hours in comfortable surroundings and be thoroughly entertained by Paul Graham and Jack Wetherall doing the hard work. It's also free, which is great news if you've spent too much money on Saturday
night!
Appearing every Sunday, Graham and Wetherall have improvisation down to a T. After learning the tricks of the trade with Edinburgh University’s Bedlam Theatre, these two pals have branched out on their own, refining their improvisation skills to an almost instantaneous quality since first appearing as a duo last December; bouncing weird and wonderful ideas off
each other at breakneck speed.
The show is offered in four bite-size sets, and the audience are free to wander in and out while the improv games are played onstage. In contrast to the usual boozy late-night setting for improvisation, the atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back - part of the reason this innovative idea works. In co- director Tommy Sheppard's words, ‘lt's the comedy equivalent of jazz on a Sunday afternoon. We're trying to provide a whole experience.’
Whose Lunch . . . does this by complementing the comedy with a good cheap bar and great food. Main courses are all under £4 and Alan ‘Sweet Pea’ McLeod's cooking is wholesome and tasty. Audience participation and a changing menu mean that no two weeks are the same. A refreshing change from sitting in cafes, and more fun than painkillers. (Tracy Griffen)
