ABSOLUTE JAZZ NEW‘YORK STYLE

Californian dreamboat: Arj Barker

last year with his tales of isolation and observation as an American abroad. This year there’s no dramatic thread linking the gags, just a deepening of Arj’s stage persona as the kind of nervous but nice goofer who gets twitchy around girls and then falls too heavily for them.

The show doesn’t sparkle throughout and Barker seems a little unsure of himself. His star is still very much in the ascendant and he is still one of the better comics at the Festival, it’s JUSL that the comedy rocket fuel doesn’t seem to be burning quite as bright as last year. (Jonathan Trew) 5a Arj Barker (Fringe) P/easance ‘-=:' '2‘: (Venue 33) 556 6550, until 37 Aug This mild-mannered Californian (not 24), 9. 75pm, f8.50/£7.50 scooped the Perrier newcomer award ([7.50/f6.50).

humour is benign and sweet and his targets resolutely soft (the Spice Girls, Chris Eubank, the England World Cup squad), so when the audience laughs, it’s because he's such an appealing bloke, and not because he’s Just scaled new heights of comic genius. A pleasant hour's entertainment, but soriiewhat lacking in new insights and reliant on lazy race and gender stereotyping. (Hannah McGill)
