The Little Mermaid (U) (John Musker/Ron Clements. US. I989) 82 mins. Disney‘s ailing fortunes quickly reversed when this delightful animated feature first came out in I989. There's the universal appealling story of the mermaid Ariel's love for handsome Prince Eric. Oscar-winning songs. hurnanised animal sidekicks and some colourful set-pieces. Lock. Stock And Two Smoking Barrels (Guy Ritchie. UK. I997) Nick moran. Jason Statham. Vinnie Jones. |07 mins. A cocky young bunch of ‘entrepreneurs‘ set up a card game with east end London criminal Hatchet Harry. Of course. things don‘t work out in their favour and they find themselves owing the gangster plenty of dosh. Witty homage to the British cn'me thrillers of the l960s. with appropriately seedy. underworld locations and streetwise dialogue. Thursday previews only.
Lost In Space (PC) (Stephen Hopkins. US. I998) William Hurt. Gary Oldman. Matt Le Blane. I09 mins. The cult TV series for the 60s gets a 90s make-over and. despite the state-of—the-art special effects. it's every bit as cheesy as the original. Professor John Robinson (Hurt) and his family are sent to colonise the distant planet ofAlpha Prime. but an act of sabotage causes them to spin into the stratosphere. Certain performances are so irritating that most viewers will sympathise with Oldman‘s craven villain. General release.
The Magic Sword (U) (Frederik Du Chau. US. I998) With the voices of Gary Oldman. Jessalyn Gilsig. Cary Elwes. 88 mins. All is happy under King Arthur‘s rule until evil Lord Ruber tries to steal Excalibur. When the wondrous weapon becomes lost in the Forbidden Forest. plucky young Kayley reckons she‘s brave enough to save the day. This animated feature sticks to the Disney fomiula — action. bawled-out ballads. kooky sidekieks - but the animation itself lacks Walt‘s grace. General release.
Martha - Meet Frank. Daniel And Laurence (15) (Nick Hamm. UK. 1997) Monica Potter. Rufus Sewell. Tom Hollander. Joseph Fiennes. 88 mins. During two days in London. American Martha encounters three best buddies — all of whom are instantly smitten by her and fall out among themselves. At first glance. a simple comic triptych about fate and missed chances. its complex storytelling perspectives don't really suit the romance genre. Kirkcaldy: Adam Smith. Mousellunt (U) (Gore Verbinski. US. I997) Nathan Lane. Lee Evans. Christopher Walken. 98 mitts. Lane and Evans play hapless brothers who inherit a dccripit mansion. but when they decide to renovate auction it. a resident rodent is not willing to be evicted. An excellent blend of Laurel and Hardy slapstick and black humour. MnuseHmrr is sheer entertainment and has some real belly laughs. The tone and the pacing are spot-

on throughout. and the sets and special effects are the icing on the cake. Edinburgh: Odeon.
Mrs Brown (PG) (John Madden. UK. l997) Judi Deneh. Billy Connolly. Antony Sher. 103 mins. Queen Victoria's obsessive mourning for Prince Albert is casting gloom over the entire country. so Highland ghillie John Brown is called down from Balmoral to shake up the stuffy English court. Maddcn‘s film can't match the comic brio and visual panache of The Madness 0f K irrg George. but his understated direction undeniably suits the story. The performances are uniformly splendid. with Dench and Connolly (both perfectly cast) giving the film a surprising emotional depth. Glasgow: GFT. Falkirk: FTH.
The Object Of My Affection (15) (Nicholas Hytner. US. I998) Jennifer Aniston. Paul Rudd. Nigel Hawthorne. lll mins. Nina falls for George and. as it the way of Hollywood romantic comedies. there‘s a major obstacle lying in the way of true love. This time. however. the complication has a twist — he's gay. The film plays against its genre by being more concerned with the pain of unrequited love than with romantic fulfilment. but there's a blandness that prevents it from being truly successful. Paulie (PG) (John Roberts. US. 1998) Jay Mohr. Tony Shalhoub. Gena Rowlands. 91 mins. Caged in a research institute. Paulie the parrot relates his life-story: from helping a little girl with a stutter to a series of adventures with various adults. Neither as immediately cute nor as bizarrely inspired as Babe. Paulie nevertheless marks a step in the right direction for the DreamWorks studio. Jay Mohr's vocal talents give the parrot a streetwise sense. wile the mix of live action and animatronics is always realistic. Glasgow: UCI Clydebank. Edinbtrrgh: Dominion. Greenock: Waterfront. Irvine: Magnum. WMR.
Paws (PG) (Karl Zwicky. Australia/UK. l997) Nathan Cavaleri. Emilie Francois. voice of Billy Connolly. 83 mins. Clever doggie PC is on a mission to deliver a computer disc. but is being tracked down by the unpleasant baddie who killed his master. Befriending computer whizz kid Zac. the mutt links up to a voice simulator and starts talking with the broad twang of Billy Connolly. Some genuinely funny moments allow for a whole range of teenage crises to be dealt with in an uncringeworthy fashion. Ayr: ()deon.
Six Days. Seven Nights (12) (Ivan Reitman. US. I998) Harrison Ford. Anne Heche. David Schwimmer. l()2 mins. Ford is a dissolute pilot. content with island-hopping jobs in the south Pacific. Heche is the single-minded magazine editor with whom he unexpectedly ends up stranded on a desert island. Will bitchy comments and knockabout humour lead to romance? The stars make a winning screen couple. although the film itself settles for easier comedic options and light-hearted adventure. Glasgow: Odeon Quay. Paisley: Showcase.

John Lynch. 99 mins. Mousy-haired PR executive Helen gets fired and discovers her handsome Irish boyfriend is a two- timer. Blonde PR woman Helen is more successful and dates a handsome Scot. This sharply observed romantic comedy splits Helen’s life in two when she misses/catches a tube train. Utterly entertaining. and one of the best British movies of I998. Paisley: Showcase. Ulee's Gold (15) (Victor Nunez. US. 1997) Peter Fonda. Patricia Richardson. Tom Wood. lIl mins. Fonda proves himself back on form with this film about a bee-keeping widower and Vietnam vet who is yanked out of his solitary existence to search for the missing wife of his imprisoned son. While atmospheric photography reinforces the overall mood. a gripping crime intrigue plot drives the story along. Fonda's admirable performance is also both moving and honest. Stirling: MaeRobert Arts Centre. Wag The Dog ( l 5) (Barry Levinson. US. 1997) Robert De Niro. Dustin Hoffman. Anne Heche. 97 mins. A spin doctor cooks up a fictitious war to help a US President through a tricky and scandal-filled rc- clection campaign — all done-and-dustcd well before Clinton's Monica Lewinsky scandal surfaced. But outside its frighteningly impeccable timing. this Mamet-scripted satire comes in heavy handed form. As one 'problem‘ after another is encountered and solved. the cool. ironic tone of the opening section is rapidly replaced by one of simple hysteria. Stirling: MaeRobert.
The Wedding Singer (12) (Frank Coraci. US. l997) Drew Barrymore. Adam Sandler. Christine Taylor. 97 mins. After his bride dumps him at the altar. Robbie (Sandler) puts on a happy face at his day job — singing at other people's weddings. When his waitress friend (Barrymore) also suffers nuptual disappointment. an unexpected romance blossoms. Packed with a sublime 80s soundtrack. and featuring some of the artist amusing fashions since Boogie Nights. this is a genuine out-of-nowhere delight. General release.
Western ( I 51 (Manuel Poirier. I-‘ranee. I997) Sergi Lopez. Sacha Bourdo. I36 mins. ()utsiders within their current environment. Spanish shoe salesman Pan and scruffy Russian Nino become unlikely friends when they drive from village to village in Brittany. Combining the attractive countryside with a flamenco guitar soundtrack. Poirier has created an amusineg cross-cultural backdrop for this dryly comic buddy movie. Like a French Il’r’rlrmul ci- Ion the road. but less eventful. Kirkcaldy: Adam Smith.

Transferring the most culturally significant TV show of recent times to the big screen was always going to be a risk. However. Fig/r! The Future is basically a really. really good episode of The X-Fi/es complete with almost incomprehensible plot. With a number of scenes of almost unbearable tension. some incredible effects and a deepening of the Mulder/Scully relationship. this is a thrilling movie which can be enjoyed by
