Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin. This year, the Edinburgh International Festival will be bursting with musical genius.
Concerts, opera and chamber recitals, including the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras and Dalibor performed by Scottish Opera, offer a rare chance to enjoy the works of Romantic Czech composer Smetana.
A host of renowned singers, including Barbara Bonney, Olaf B'ar, Amanda Roocroft and Bryn Terfel will treat you to the complete songs of Hugo Wolf, and Paavo Berglund will conduct the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, taking you through the symphonies of Sibelius.
There will be performances of Bach, as interpreted by Catalan maverick Carles Santos, an exploration of Scottish Harp music throughout the ages, late night performances of plainchant and polyphony and morning recitals by some of the
greatest artists of the day.
Other unforgettable events include a celebration of the life and work of musical visionary Pierre Boulez, the two week residency of The Royal Opera, and performances by a multitude of distinguished pianists such as Alfred Brendel, Richard Goode, Andras Schiff and Maria Joao Pires.
