Andrew Weatherall: park life's a blur
Andrew Weatherall is looking surprisingly sprightly as we collar him for a quick chat after he's played the dawn in at the club night for Expo '98 in Lisbon. A thousand insane Portuguese are still up for it as we leave at 113m, but even for Lord Weatherall of Sabre, this is probably enough. He's not mad keen on playing abroad, fearing that the locals, muttering in some foreign dialect, are saying ’that Weatherall ees sheete’, but last night he, Twitch of Pure and a brace of local 015 evidently rocked the joint.
'I don‘t do myself any favours, never leaving dear old Blighty and getting built up out of all proportion,’ he says. ’l've probably missed out over the last couple of years by just being paranoid really.’
Same with festivals; he says he just ends up getting too stoned and can’t be bothered walking out of the VIP enclosure to see any bands. This fortnight, though, he's looking forward to playing Rub-A-Dub's all-day dance festival at Kelvingrove Park, taking a bit of time off from his new album project for Warp to catch up with old friends.
'l've been good mates with the Rub-A-Dub guys since year dot really,‘ he says. He's spent the last couple of Christmases up here with them and their regular Club 69 in Paisley and likens them to a long-lost family.
'In their own way they are quietly one of the most influential groups of people that Glasgow has to offer, but they'd probably hate me saying that,’ he says laughing. ’There's no bullshit with them, that's the bottom line.
There's not a wide-o amongst them.’
And the new album? He's not saying a word, except that it‘s 90% done and he’s just got a few more weeks to work on it in his vicarage studio before it goes to the pressing works. The Lord does work in mysterious
