Heckle and hide: Phil Kay
Heckling is part and parcel of the comedy scene, but the line needs to be
drawn somewhere.
Here’s why - because the first night of this new club was destroyed by the activities of a couple of beer boys who helped reinforce myths about Glasgow audiences. When even a veteran like Phil Kay is driven from the stage in defeat, you know things have gone too far. The gangly Glasgow funnyman's set foundered in a sea of constant interruption and efforts to
upstage him.
Kay’s act isn’t the traditional stream of gags. He requires an audience that is willing to go with him some way, as he free-associates and thrives on spontaneity. That backfired when he invited one of the vocal audience members up on stage for a song. Clearly intended to embarrass him into silence, the stunt misfired spectacularly when the punter turned out to be a
dab hand on the guitar.
But Sloane’s does show promise as a comedy venue. MC Billy Bonkers was tedious at best, but the support acts were all strong. Viv Gee matched her own customary high standards, while David Kay has great potential.
The most intriguing act was 12-year-old Ashley Storrie, who performed a short set, during which the bar had to shut to circumvent licensing restrictions. She's funny, but it’s pretty unsettling to hear an underage girl
cracking gags about dildoes.
Either she has been drilled to say things she doesn't understand — which is worrying — or she knows exactly what she’s talking about, which is
