The things that matter about Mark Farina.
Name The Best Goddam DJ in The World.
Real name Mark Farina.
Age Late twentysomething.
Lives Chicago.
Who he then? Oh, just one of the most talented house DJs ever.
I've heard that one before Yeah well, this is different. Farina can do things with records that most other DJs can only dream about.
How do you know? Because I had the pleasure of witnessing one of his sets at Tribal Funktion in Edinburgh last year. What was it like? Try 'unbelievably stunningingly awesome rather splendid indeed thank you very much’.
How come? He just played a bit of everything, building a complete set that ran from really deep house and soulful, vocal house, through groovy disco and
bumpy underground garage, right up to
raw Chicago trax. He even mixed in a couple of oddities (like an old Sting track) to keep the crowd on its toes. It really was a case of something for everyone and, even better, it fitted together perfectly.
Is that all he does? Well, he is best known as a DJ, and he doesn't really
make that much music (although he has
produced a couple of tracks and mixed a couple of compilations), but he has got a few other stories to tell.
For example? Well, he used to share a
flat with fellow DJ extraordinaire Derrick
Carter (as well as producer Chric Nazuka), plus he used to work in Gramaphone Records, Chicago‘s premier record store.
Anything else? He's been Dling since he
was in his early teens, he used to like really weird indie/alternative stuff like Front 242 and Ministry, he's dead into football (Arsenal and AC Milan), basketball and snowboarding.
What's he got to say for himself then? ‘
Well, he’s very concerned with the 'art' of Dling. He says, ’We call it "on the spot production”, it's just like an extension of producrng music for us. We've always taken pride in laying two records together to make a new song.’ So he takes it very seriously then? Definitely. He says, 'There's the song, which is really good by itself, then there's the chunk in the middle that's the blend. I’ve always though that the blend is as important as the song.’ With Farina, you get the real deal.
I Mark Farina guests at Tribal Funkti‘on, The Venue, Edinburgh on Sat 20 jun.
