CAKE-RELATED HUMOUR

Jo Brand

Glasgow: Cottier Theatre, Fri 5 & Sat 6 Jun

Blokes, cakes and waistlines all feature heavily in every teen mag problem page. But fat and fed-up from Funnyville, Jo Brand blames the tabloids for lumbering her with the whole cake-loving, bloke-hating image.

'Naturally I fear being seen as a one- trick pony,’ confesses the woman who's having a bad hair life. 'I think the label comes out of their need to over-simplify everything, which means people blank out all the other stuff I talk about. It's not going to change, either, unless I lose eight stone and start spouting about tubular scaffolding.’ As if.

Happily wed since last December, it's also clear that, unless she's a masochist, she doesn't hate men at all - aside from those of the brain dead or misogynistic varieties.

Ball-chewing Brand could never be described as timid, but the notion of doing 3 Victoria Wood - disappearing for months on end, and resurfacing with a bumper backage of new material - is a proposition which sets her a-quiver.

'It'd be way too nerve-racking to do a whole new show which could potentially be a pile of crap.’ she confesses. So expect the tried-and-tested to be spliced with topical musings, all delivered in tones drier than the Virgin Mary.

Glad to be lending her weight to this fundraiser for Glasgow Women's Support Project, a charity she feels strongly about, Brand points out, 'A lot of my stuff is about what's going on generally in society and whatever has caught my eye in the news.’

As such, expect an attack on a colonel, quoted in the press recently, on why it‘s better to have a dog than a woman: when they whine you can shoot them.

An ardent supporter of Old Labour, the former psychiatric nurse admits to being more than a tad weary of the Blair brigade. 'All this American-style. substance-free packaging has really disillusioned us old-timers. In the States it's led to the widening of the gap between rich and poor and the development of this whole underclass which I fear may happen here.’

See, she's not just a pretty face. (Claire Prentice)
