Cinderella
Seen at St Brides Centre,
Mon 6 Apr. Touring.
If your preconceptions of Cinderella are that of fairy godmothers and men dressed as dames. then leave them outside the theatre. In Edinburgh Puppet Company’s treatment of the classic Grimm Brothers tale, they stay true to the original version.
The classical score which runs throughout the performance is hauntingly beautiful as we are transported to Cinderella’s sad and lonely life. When her father remarries, she inherits a nasty stepmother and two equally nasty stepsisters. Distraught, Cinderella refuses to speak, only to find solace in a magical tree, which lies close to her mother's resting ground.
This is a very moving and visual piece of theatre and the hand-carved wooded puppets are delicately manipulated by the more than competent performers. Imaginative
f) k.
theatrical devices, notably the shadow puppet sequence, create the fairytale setting. And as with all fairytales, it's not all doom and gloom for Cinders, as she goes to the ball, meets her handsome prince and lives happy ever after. The pace is a little slow in places which can leave younger audiences distracted, but for those who like to see puppetry at its very best, this a visual
treat. (Helen Monaghan)
