Introducing Brooklyn’s Deejay Punk- Roc.
Name Charles Geddes aka Deejay Punk- Roc.
Age 26.
Origin Brooklyn.
Occupation DJ, producer and ex-army bloke.
Bit of an odd career change At sixteen, he left home and high school to join the army after spending his early teenage years ‘up to no good'. He was stationed around the world, including Japan, Germany and England.
Does he regret his army years? Not at all. 'It taught me to be dedicated and be the best 1 could be,’ he says about his five year stint. 'I know that anything 1 set out to do, I have to give it my all.’ Why did he leave? He realised that if he stayed any longer he would have become a military machine, which wasn't the way he wanted to spend the rest of his life.
Was it an easy transition to make? Pretty much so. He’d been Dling at block parties since he was a kid and had always been into music. When he got back on the decks after de-mobbing, he found that he hadn't lost any of his skills and went back to working the parties and started making music.
Has he got much of a name for himself in the States? Apart from his immediate home area, not really. His debut album Chickeneye, a mish-mash of hip hop, break beats and old school electro, 15 being released on small independent Manchester label Airdog.
How did that happen? Punk-Roc's Florida cousin was helping Airdog put together a compilation CD called Still Searchin’ and sent over a tape with a track his Brooklyn relative had been working on. Airdog loved it, asked him if he had anymore, and within three weeks he had delivered them a complete album.
ls his stuff any good? Absolutely storming. His new Single ‘My BeatbOx’ has the loudest boom-out beats of anything out just now, combined with vocodered chant, and electro bass. Mick Jones from The Clash and Big Audio Dynamite is on remix duties, and if it doesn’t chart then there is absolutely no justice whatsoever. (Rory Weller)
