The chaos of the streets is set against the calm of the court in a film that Cahiers Du Cinema claimed made Western films ‘slow. old and turgid' by comparison. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. The Tango Lesson (PG) (Sally Potter. UK. 1997) Sally Potter. Pablo Veron. 102 mins. Orlando director Sally Potter plays herself, a filmmaker distracted from writing a script by her obsession with the magic and passion of the tango. Travelling to Latin America to experience the dance first hand. her relationship with sexy Argentinian dancer Pablo Veron spills over into their private lives. Rhythmic and passionate. The Tango Lesson tenderly expresses the choreography of modern love. Kirkcaldy: Adam Smith. Tenderness Of The Wolves ( 18) (Ulli bommel. Germany. 1973) 83 mins. Based on the events that inspired M. this dark comedy thriller uses a patchwork of incidents to stop moralising from being too easy. Con-man and police informer Fritz Haarrnann picks up runaway boys. kills them and sells their remains as meat. and although his acts remain horrific. society itself isn't let off the hook. Glasgow: GFT. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Thunderball (PG) (Terence Young. UK. 1965) Sean Connery. Claudine Auger. Adolfo Celi. 130 mins. When SPECTRE nicks a couple of nuclear bombs. who ya gonna call? Bond in his fourth outing is as sleek and stylish as ever. even when swimming with sharks in the bad guy's pool. Glasgow: GFT. Titanic (12) (James Cameron. US. 1997) Leonardo DiCaprio. Kate Winslet. Billy Zane. 194 mins. Cameron tackles the story of the doomed ocean liner through a touching love story that isn't overwhelmed by the awesome special effects. Rich girl Rose (Mnslet) is unhappily engaged to arrogant Cal (Zane) but falls for third-class passenger Jack (DiCaprio): love blossoms as the ship hits an iceberg in the North Atlantic. In all its on-screen glory. Titanic does indeed look like the most expensive film ever made. conveying both the scale of the disaster and the feeling of claustrophobia as the water rises. General release. To Die For (15) (Gus Van Sant. US. 1995) Nicole Kidman. Matt Dillon. Joaquin Phoenix. 107 mins. Obsessed with TV fame. Suzanne (Kidman) takes a job as a weathergirl with her local cable station. but uses her position to begin a documentary on modern youth. And uses her subjects to knock at? her husband (Dillon). a ball-and- chain around her ambitious ankles. Van Sant’s ultimately tragic satire on the psychological power of US media isn’t a new subject. but his treatment is enlivened considerably by an excellently judged performance by Kidman. who shows her true potential. Edinburgh: Cameo. Toy Story (PG) (John Lasseter. US. 1995) M111 the voices of Tom Hanks. Tim Allen. Don Rickles. 8| mins. 1t isn'tjust the state- of-the-art images that distinguish Disney‘s first computer-generated animation feature. it's got a cracking adventure story too. A tale of friendship and self-belief combined with an exciting rescue and against-the-clock tension. Toy Story is sprinkled with comic asides. Don't be fooled into thinking these toys are just for the kids. Edinburgh: City Centre ABC. Ugetstr Monogatari (12) (Kenji Mizoguchi. Japan. 1953) 96 mins. One of the defining arthouse movies of the 50s is at last available again in the UK. During a bitter civil war. a greedy potter takes advantage of the situation while his neighbour heads ofi' to become a samurai. As in much of Mizoguchi's work. it‘s the women who bear the brunt of male irresponsibility. Formally composed. with a compelling humanism at its core. See review. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Under The Skin (18) (Carine Adler. UK. 1997) Samantha Morton. Claire Rushbrook. Rita Tushingham. 85 mins. Sisters Iris (Morton) and Rose (Rushbrook) are devastated when their mother (Tushingham) dies from a brain tumour. and Iris resorts to a series of increasingly high-risk sexual encounters which alienate her from both

family and friends. Director Adler allows her three lead actresses to establish full and rounded characters with remarkable simplicity. but her plotting is wayward. East Kilbride: Arts Centre.
Wag The Dog (15) (Barry Levinson. US. 1997) Robert De Niro. Dustin Hoffman. Anne Heche. 97 mins. A spin doctor cooks up a fictitious war to help a US President through a tricky and scandal-filled re- election campaign - all done-and-dusted well before Clinton's Monica Lewinsky scandal surfaced. But outside its frighteningly impeccable timing. this Mamet-scripted satire comes in heavy handed form. As one 'problem' after another is encountered and solved. the cool. ironic tone of the opening section is rapidly replaced by one of simple hysteria. See review. Glasgow: Odeon Quay. Edinburgh: UC1.
West Side Story (PG) (Robert Wise & Jerome Robbins. US. 1961) Natalie Wood. Richard Beymer. Russ Tamblyn. 155 mins. Romeo And Juliet revisited against a background of New York gangs. Great songs of course. but the playing of the stylised dancing against a realistic background contrives to make it all look rather camp these days. Edinburgh: Cameo.
The Wind In The Willows (U) (Terry Jones. UK. 1996) Terry Jones. Eric Idle. Steve Coogan. 88 mins. When Mole's home is destroyed by weasel property developers. he enlists the help of Rat. Badger and egotistical Toad to uncover a conspiracy. Jones's Python-for-kids adaptation of the classic novel is a tad self-indulgent. with some awful songs and lacklustre pacing. However. the characters and atmosphere will probably charm a younger audience not yet into their more cynical teens. Glasgow: Virgin.
The Wings Of The Dove (15) (lain Softley. UK. 1997) Helena Bonham Carter. Linus Roache. Alison Elliott. 108 mins. An intelligent. emotionally devastating adaptation of Henry James’s novel that confidently side-steps the pitfalls of stuffy costume drama. Prevented from marrying her humble lover. Kate (Bonham Carter) plots to pair him off with a rich. sickly American. Everything about this film emphasises quality. including the costumes. photography. use of Venice as a setting and — above all - the peerless performances. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. UC1.
The Winter Guest (15) (Alan Rickman. UK. 1997) Phyllida Law. Emma Thompson. Gary Hollywood. 110 mins. There's something about the way Rickman's directorial debut moves from one pair of characters to the next that suggests it‘s based on a play. but that's not a criticism. The film works out themes of loss and emotional dependency against a snow-covered Scottish landscape. weaving its icy metaphor through the characters' inner lives and the film's computer-enhanced images. The cast is excellent. with Law proving herself one of the country's hidden treasures. Edinburgh: Cameo.
Written on the Wind (PG) (Douglas Sirk. US. 1956) Lauren Bacall. Robert Stack. Dorothy Malone. Rock Hudson. 99 mins. A fine film and one of Hollywood's best ever melodramas. Four characters connected to a Texan oil family act on their passions rather than their intellects as love and desire concoct a tempestuous mix leading to tragedy. A prototype soap opera. but incisive in its criticism on the middle-class and notions of masculinity. Glasgow: GFT.
