Paul Weir Flyweight boxer
As a lover of TV soaps, Paul Weir is familiar with dramatic situations.
Somewhat appropriately, the Irvine boxer‘s future is balanced on a knife's
edge as he prepares for his Commonwealth title fight with
Zimbabwe's Alfonso Zvenyika. The 30- year-old flyweight knows he is one punch away from a shot at his third world crown, but equally, any lapse in
concentration could end his career.
Having lost his last bout in Denmark, the former mini- and light-flyweight
world champion is aware he can't
afford another slip. ‘Any fighter in my position would say it’s his last chance,’
he admits. ’I've had a rest, which is
something I needed. Now I'm back and I'm in good condition, but I‘ve got to
prove it mentally. I feel up for the job, 7 I but we‘ll only find out when I enter the /V., ring. I’ll be edgy, but there's something ’1 wrong with a fighter if he's not - that’s
what keeps you on your toes. ’I don't know anything about
Zvenyika. I'll get an idea at the weigh-
in - if he‘s tall and thin, for example, he's likely to be a boxer rather than a puncher. It would be great to make another piece of history, becoming only the fourth Scot to win the Commonwealth title.’
St Andrew’s Sporting Club in Glasgow will provide the ideal setting as it celebrates its 25th anniversary with live TV coverage and bagpipes galore. Manager and promoter Tommy Gilmour guided Weir to his first world title in only his sixth fight, and now spies further glory ahead.
