The name’s Bond, James Bond . . .
Five actors have played the enduring action hero, and their debriefings have unearthed some classified information.
1. Unlike the character of James Bond, who was a Naval ‘Commander’,
Sean Connery only served as an able seaman for three years in the Royal Navy until he was
discharged with an ulcer.
2. Australian male model George Lazenby was due to be on the cover of Life magazine
until he was bumped off when the Pope banned the contraceptive pill.
3. The oldest of the Bonds (he was 58 when A View To A Kill was released). Roger Moore
was the only one of the actors to be born in England.
4. Shakespeare has always been close to Timothy Dalton: he caught the acting bug
watching Macbeth, aged 16; his stage debut was in Coriolanus with the National Youth
Theatre; and he played an acclaimed Romeo in Romeo And Juliet for the Royal
Shakespeare Company.
5. Afterjoining his girlfriend, later wife, Cassandra Harris in Corfu for her role as
Countess Lisl in For Your Eyes Only, Pierce Brosnan — who several times trod the boards at the Citizens’ Theatre in Glasgow — was spotted by Bond producer Albert R.
Broccoli and offered the role before Timothy Dalton.
