Jim Byers unmask: Colman a.k.a. Green What um. r. , _
Real name Curtis Jones.
Also known as Green Velvet. Lives Chicago.
Age 30.
Occupation Prolific house producer. Also the creative visionary and business brains behind the Cajual and Relielf labels.
Personality traits As Curtis Jones, he is quiet and shy, as Cajmere he is a flamboyant DJ, as Green Velvet he is a green~wig and tight vest-wearing nutbag. Actually, he's a bit of all three. in his own words, he’s an ‘artist', like George Clinton, Sly Stone or Grace Jones, someone who is prepared to dig a little deeper into his art than most.
in a previous life Jones studied chemical engineering at the University Of lilinois, later continuing as a post- graduate student at the University Of California, Berkeley.
The turning point in 1990, midway through his studies, Jones started messing about with a friend's (Hula from theOuthere Brothers) recording equipment. Before you could say ‘music's a disease and he's caught the bug', Jones was hooked.
Previous form Jones' first releases ‘Coffee Pot (it's Time For The Perculator)’ and ‘Underground Goodies Vol 1' came out via Clubhouse Records. These were followed by ’Get With U' and 'Brighter Days', the first of his collaborations with vocalist Karen Gordon (aka Dajae).
What happened next? With the critical and commercial success of 'Brighter Days' in particular, Jones decided to set up his own label — Cajual. His imprint put Chicago back on the map and also served as a valuable first home for a new generation of young Chicago producers, including Gemini, Sneak and Glenn Underground. tater. Jones established another label - Relief RecOrds - for harder house and techno material and another persona — Green Velvet - for his more eccentric output.
Present status Jones splits his time between running Cajual and Relief, making his own music as Cajmere and Green Velvet, remixing other people's , muSic and travelling the world as a DJ. _As Green Velvet, he also plays live sets in {duos and festivals. He is currently ivyorking on a full Green Velvet album .lfgr. release this year. .
