ROCK Green Day
Glasgow: Barrowland, Sat 24 & Sun 25 Jan.
’Tell you what, do you want to tell your readers the one way to get into any rock show for free?’ shrills drummer Tre Cool in his impossibly fast, nasal whine. Green Day may have sold urnpteen squillions of their three power pop albums since signing to Warners but anarchy is still alive and kicking in the hearts of the California Bay trio. Even if this only extends as far as blagging into concerts rather than smashing the system.
Here in Britrit of course, we couldn't give a corporate backslap about the balancing act between Independent label credibility and the advantages of being signed to a major label, or sucking Satan’s schlong as it’s known to our American punk cousins. America's sanctimonious underground punk scene would probably like to see Green Day crucified, For their part Green Day spit chips at the suggestion
they were ever punk rock to begin with.
However, Tre Cool has short shrift for anybody who might even begin to query just how much Green Day mean it, man. 'Everyone With half a brain can realise we don't run things in the same way that a typical sell-out band would,’ he splutters indignantly ’We’re not fucking Jon Bon Jovr or The Smashing Pumpkins, out to milk every dime out of everybody that’s into us We want to look forward rather than just looking for the bucks.’
Righto. Here's Tre Cool’s handy gig- crashing hint. ’You get chef's pants, you know checked pants and a white chef's shirt and hat. You carry a pile of dishes and put a shoestring around your neck to look like a laminate A fucking playing card on the end of a shoestring Will do the job and as long as you’ve got dishes \vith food on them you can walk right into \ivhatever band’s dressing room.’
Just don’t try it at the Barrowiand. (Jonathan Trew)
JAZZ The Solar Suite
Glasgow: RSAIVID, Fri 30 Jan; Edinburgh: Queen's Hall, Thu 29 Jan. It carries a rather cumbersome name, but the Scottish Composer's Jazz Ensemble has the potential to be the most important development in jazz in these parts in a long time, It shares a genesis and most of its line-up With the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, and although Tommy Smith IS the director of both bands, each has a distinct function
While the SNJO is a repertory band dedicated to playing classic jazz charts a the first tour of their Winter programme ‘eatured the mum of Ellington and Strayhorn ~ With a sprinkling of home-grown arrangements, the SCJE Will provrde the principal focus for original work by Scottish toiriposers, or those who have based themselves in Scotland.
Talking to Smith over the past couple of years, it has been obvrous that while he is strongly committed to the SNJO (and the National Jazz Institute itself), the SCJE has a special significance for him. His own development as a composer has been achieved in spite of the lack of such a framework, and he now wants to prowde opportunities for others.
The Ensemble was launched at the Glasgow Jazz Festival last year, when they played three sections from an ambitious work they Wlll perform in full this month The Solar Surte will

Tommy Smith: aligning the planets
open With Smith’s ’In The Beginning, followed by a piece for each of the planets by Robert Henderson, tvlaiio Caribe, Stewart Forbes, Phil Bancroft, Adrian Drover, Eddie Severn, John Rae, Dave Conway, and Brian Kellock.
Plans for the band to perform Smith’s ’Planet Wave’ in March are in doubt due to funding difficulties, and it would be a great pity if that tour is cancelled. The SNJO Will collaborate with Kenny Wheeler in May, while Smith Will have his next album, a quartet disc dedicated COIIlCIdenlally to his interpretations of the music of Ellington and Strayhorn, released by Linn Records in early February.
