DEVISED SHOW Quiet Night In
Glasgow: Tron Theatre, Wed 2 t—Sat 24 Jan. Edinburgh: Traverse Theatre, Thu 29 lnSun 1 Feb.
Communication age: Graham Eatough tries to enjoy 3 Quiet Night In
if you came back from your Christmas break to a mountain of post, a frenzied light on your answering machine and an X~Files specimen in the fridge, you'll know how he feels. Returning from a photographic assignment in Africa, the main character in KtC's Quiet Night In is desperate to relax but can't. Thoughts and memories pop into his crowded mind, from his ex-lovers to the family dog.
The piece was created by David Harrower, writer of the highly acclaimed Knives In Hens, working closely with five performers and director Guy Hollands. ’The piece is totally devised,’ explains Harrower. 'I wouldn't even call it a play, so much as a meditation on themes.’
It’s almost two years since the show was first performed as a work-in- progress at Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre, and the finished product has altered radically, becoming a metaphor for ageing and the acquisition of wisdom. lntriguingly, the set was inspired by the tape slot in a VCR, creating a cinematographically narrow acting space.
For Harrower, the creative experience was very different from Knives In Hens. 'l had to unlearn the ways I usually approach writing,’ he says. 'Usually there’s a direct involvement with the subjects. I don't use interior monologues, l write the surface of the play. This was a chance to look at the things behind, using slides and videos to dramatise abstract thought. It was a fascinating discovery.’ (Stephanie Noblett)
