Mark Ryal: 'Glasgow has become way too saturated'
Aquaplanet's Mark Ryal and Paul Fegan are doing it. They're packing up a van with all their records, decks and equipment and leaving Glasgow, heading off to sunny Barcelona to give the Spanish an eyeful of their club vision.
Thirty-year—old DJ Ryal and promoter Fegan, 24, have been running clubs and parties in Glasgow for the last three years, with nights like Red Cell, UK Gold and, of course, Aquaplanet. The mix is hard house, deep techno and the best guests in the world who enjoy the experience so much they keep asking to come back.
Their Thursday and Sunday nights are at the core of the scene, keeping the underground vibe going and stretching the concept of weekend until it’s ready to snap. Glasgow's Sub Club is their home, and the staff, guest DJs and clubbers are their family. They love Aquaplanet with such unbridled passion that they've got into fights to defend it and describe it as 'the most influential club on the planet'. The obvious question is therefore, why the hell are they forsaking all of this for Gaudi and paella?
’lt's a beautiful city, great climate, nice food and friendly people,’ says Ryal, who has been over a few times on holiday. 'Glasgow, now, has just become way too saturated — too many DJs and promoters, and not enough people who are into their music.’
Although they have conquered Thursday and Sunday nights, they must play a Saturday night to really progress, and the only place they'd consrder doing it would be the Sub Club. Harri has been there for ten years and is likely to be there for another decade.
So the house is on the market, the van IS booked and they’re organising a massrve testimonial date at Glasgow University's Queen Margaret Student Union. They plan an obscenely large line-up, with the likes of Derrick May, Claude Young, Dan Curtin and Green Velvet.
Ryal and Fegan reckon they can go to Spain and make their own chances. They have a folder full of flyers for nights they’ve run to show they mean business and a list of clubs to target. God help Barcelona, they won't know what‘s hit them. (Rory Weller)
