MONDAY 13
Glasgow
I Spiritualized Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £8.50 plus booking fee. At last. Spiritualized on a decent-sized stage from which to launch their psychedelia and strobe attack. One of the least mobile live bands in the world. but strangely one of the most dynamic. Float on. dig the guitar overload and get blinded by the light. Plus Spring Heel Jack DJs.
I Damage Pavilion Theatre. Renfteld Street. 332 1846. 7.30pm. £11. One of the current glut of boy bands who favour a combination of swingbeat and slushy ballads with. ofcourse. the all-important fancy footwork.

Edinburgh
I David Devant & His Spirit Wife, Dave and Quicksand The Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. 9pm. £5. Pulp meets Roxy Music and Bowie methinks. Not sure about the rather uncatchy name though. Mind you. the band members are called Vessel. Cocky. Colonel and Professor and they did have a single out called ‘Ginger' which Mark Radcliffe thought was rather good. One for those who like a bit of that camp theatrical Jarvis Cocker thing.
I labba The Honeycomb. Blair Street. 220 4381. 10.30pm. £3 (£3). Musicians Union (MU) members get in free. Band on stage at midnight. Young Edinburgh band who combine progressive jazz with hip hop and funk.

Bristol‘s Strangelove are finally getting the big commercial push. Perhaps their epic guitar tnaelstroms have found favour in these Radiohead-hungt'y days. But don't expect singer Patrick Duff to smile or anything. The goodwill at this gig will come from Drugstore's lsabel. the diminutive Brazilian who likes a swig of her wine bottle before launching into another bittersweet tale. See review.

The band play two sets — the first a full on ‘blow job‘ (1 think that means loads of horns. trumpets. sax etc . . . ). the second a more groove orientated affair which projects a more dancey vibe. Mind blowing stuff. With DJ Eh? Wun! on the decks.

With the recent release of his debut long player Maverick A Strike (Sony). it looks like he is officially destined for major league success. His last two Edinburgh gigs — both at La Belle Angele — were rather muted affairs. This one ought to be different. Support comes frotn the excellent Pressure Drop (see Preview). who are yet another example of downtempo British music in a similar vein to Massive Attack.
