. I. P h acth Ie Kevin Saunderson might have been aBrookIyn kid, but he put Detroit tedlno on the
Name Detroit legend.
No, real name please Okay, okay, his name is The Godfather Of Detroit Techno.
Very funny Okay, okay, his real name is Kevin Maurice Saunderson, born 9 May 1964 in Brooklyn, New York.
New York? I thought he was from Detroit? He moved to Detroit when he was nine.
Occupation One third of three former Belleville High School pals (the others being Derrick May and Juan Atkins) who are charged with inventing what we know as 'Detroit techno'.
'Detroit techno"! What's that all about then? Well, we'll skip all the boring background stuff about Dr Robert Moog, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and 805 electro and get right to the nitty gritty. Detroit techno is distinguished by a stripped-down, abrasive but strangely melancholic electronic sound. The term was first coined in an article in The Face in May 1988, when it was used to describe Saunderson's work.
Where can I hear this 'Detroit techno' then? ln very few clubs, actually. Glasgow is well-known for having a Detroit-influenced sound. Anything on labels like Transmat (Derrick May’s own imprint), Underground Resistance, Planet E, Red Planet, KMS (Saunderson's own), Submerge and Accelerate should suffice. Either that, or listen to 015 like Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin or Atkins, May and Saunderson himself.
What else does Saunderson do? He's best known for his work with Inner City who charted with 'Big Fun' and have since had eight Top 40 hits in the UK. Their debut album Paradise sold over six million worldwide. Saunderson's remix and recorded (most notably as Reese Project) work is also highly regarded. Anything else we should know? He also records under a variety of aliases,
including Tronik House, Essaray, E-Dance
and Kaos. (Jim Byers)
