life doesn’t begin and end with the Edinburgh
Festival. After a scorching summer, full of fun and games, you might be tempted to look out your comfy baffles and settle down for long nights in — but don’t forget there’s a whole lot of more interesting ways to fill your time.
It’s OK. We understand. For the past few months, you’ve been out and about, enjoying the warm weather, seeing shows, going to gigs and festivals, having a laugh, burning the candle at both ends. And then suddenly, the party’s over. The nights are getting longer and there’s a nip in the wind, you’re going back to college or getting your head down at work. Somehow it looks like there’s nothing much to look forward to.
Well, just because the television stations will be launching their autumn seasons doesn’t mean you have to stay in every night like a pomme de chaise-longue. Apart from all the films, concerts, theatre shows, art shows and clubs that’ll be taking place over the coming weeks and months (and of course, The List will be letting you know about all the good stuff), there are all kinds of other ways you can broaden your horizons.
This time last year, we introduced our first Just Do It section. In an extension to our Classified advertising pages, we brought together a wide selection of advertisements for courses, tuition and group activities. This year, Just Do It is back. Once again, some of the activities advertised are geared to people with lots of time on their hands; while others are less demanding, and can be fitted into all but the busiest of schedules — with sessions taking place in the evenings or at weekends. But if you’re interested trying out a new kind of learning experience, we’re confident you’ll find something to take your fancy.
Over the next few pages, you’ll find opportunities to brush up on your painting technique, stretch your vocal cords at a singing class, get the digits from computer software packages, perhaps even learn a new language (or brush up on one you did for your O grades).
Just Do It is a one-off, annual add-on to our Classified section, but don’t forget that there’s a regular slot for Courses which runs every fortnight, all year round. So if you feel like trying out one of these activities, or if you’re offering tuition that you think might be of interest to readers of The List, all you’ve got to do is remember three simple words . . .
