Yet more classy Aussie sounds from another gem-packed Spiegeltent programme — an all-woman sextet firin’ it up on a bewildering array of percussion while singing like angels. Congas, steel pans, djembes, surdos and marimba line up with accordion, electric fiddle, bass and drum kit, spicing their rootsy dance-mix with tasty African, Latin and Caribbean flavours, all topped with powerful multi-part harmonies. Lead vocalist, Julia Messenger can belt them out in stunning style, scaling the heights of tortured passion in ’Burn’, elsewhere coming over all cool and cutting, as in ’Lovesong' or ’To The Sea’. 'Wild Things’ struts along a sultry funk-rap groove, while the edgy, bittersweet 'Tell Me’ has ’perfect pop single' written all over it. The basic concept is that a quartet of seasoned Aussie bluegrass and country pickers have got together to take the piss out of everything they can think off, from saving the whales to country rap (’or C-rap as we call it, or just simple ol' Crap music’), prog-rock gurus to heavy metal monsters, all delivered ‘as God intended, bluegrass style’.
Calamity Jim, Texas T Tex (aka Snoop Texxy Tex), Stan Pede and Chuck Steak are about as representative of the New Man as Paul Gascoigne, but they are also a decent bluegrass band, and even if some of the jokes qwckly wear thin, they should be good fun. (Kenny Mathieson)

CONTEMPORARY PREVIEW Mr McFall’s Chamber
Orchestra
’Dance movements for which steps have yet to be invented’ seems a fair enough description for a composer to give to what he has labelled his Book OfA/leged Dances. But this extremely difficult music is far from alleged and is about to have its British premiere from Mr McFall's Chamber Orchestra. Written for the Kronos Quartet in 1994, minimalist composer John Adam's Book has been exclusive to
them until May. With sampled percussion on pre-recorded track, headphones on one ear and amplified instruments, the challenges for string quartet are immense but rewarding. Different parts of Book, interspersed with singers, dancers and compositions from Piazzola and King Crimson will be played each day, with a performance of the complete book on Sat 22. (Carol Main)
