Roots - The African Inheritance In Scotland Until l2 Jul. An exploration of the history and presence ofAfrican. Caribbean and people of African/Caribbean descent in Scotland from the 16th century to the l990s. The show draws the attention of Scots to a heritage shared with black people. Themes and topics include early travel. trade. education and family life. Part of the Scotland/Africa 97 festival.
Broad Bay Until l9 Jul. A collaboration between poet Ian Stephen and artist David Cireenall taking as its theme the I-Iebrtdean island of Lewis and its maritime traditions. Greenall is exhibiting a group of paintings inspired by Stephen's brief poetns. Also additional work by both artists including paintings. photographs and sculptural elements. Gifted Until l9 .llll. A selection of works acquired through the Jean F. Watson Bequest Fund featuring a cross-section of paintings. drawings. photographs. prints and sculpture. Artists inciude J.D. Ferguson. Sir William McTaggart and Joan Eardley.
Margaret Mellis Until 23 Jul. A retrospective exhibition looking at the career of Margaret Mellis. who was closely associated with the development of the St Ives School ill the 40s. Work on show ranges from early collages and colour structure paintings of the 60s to more recent constructions made from driftwotxl and found objects. See preview.

Surrealism And After: The Gabrielle Keiller Collection Until 9 Nov. Gabrielle Keiller. who died in December I995. left her outstanding collection of modern art to the gallery. There are over 136 paintings. sculptures. prints and drawings. including major works by Francis Bacon. Salvador Dali. Max Ernst. Man Ray and Yves Tanguy.
Matthew Dalziel And Louise Scullion Until l4 Sep. A video installation by two young Scottish artists who have been working together since the early l990s. Their work has clear references to the sea and landscapes of north-east Scotland. where they live.
