Motown’s fav0urite daughter, who's scored a US and UK chart hit every year since 1963, is back in Scotland this fortnight to sing selections from her new compilation album, The Voice Of Love. Ms Ross, whose current tour takes in Europe and the Far East, will return to the States later this year to produce and star in an English language version of Jean-Jacques Beineix’s classic neo—noir thriller Diva. Black Umfolosi
Nine members of the nineteen-strong performance collective from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe appear in Glasgow this fortnight. They form part of a special ’Taster Weekend’ for the Scotland Africa 97 festival, due to take place in October. A cappe/la harmonies, band numbers, comedy, poetry and dancing can all feature in a varied, high-energy show that will bring the vibrant culture of southern Africa flooding into Scotland. And just to prove the Scots know how to party too, Aberdeen's Old Blind Dogs will be joining in the fun. Black Umfolosi and the Old Blind Dogs play the Old Fruitmarket, Glasgow on Fri 78 Jul.

There are those who reckon Andrew Lloyd Webber should be hog-tied and spit-roasted for his contribution to the world of stage entertainment. Others have begged to differ, parking their derrieres into millions of plush theatre seats the world over, night after night. If you want a glimpse of what the newly ennobled composer’s work was like before he became a household name, Bi” Kenwright’s new touring production of Joseph — in Edinburgh this fortnight — is worth a look. Unlike the laVish Jason Donovan vehicle that had an outing a few years ago, the new version stays close in spirit to the show's original production in 1968. And, as our picture demonstrates, that spirit contained a high cheese coefficient.
